A slight tangent from the discussion in this episode, but it did remind me of an Irish Times article 'Another Irishman in the White House?' from 2000, which pointed at the political significance of Irish-Americans since the days of Kennedy and Gore Vidal, extended into the present obviously, beyond the frame of would-be President Gore, to Biden and Steve Bannon. I wonder if 'Irish ancestry' in the US is essentially an ideal, especially given that claims to Irish ancestry in more literal and empirical terms are often ridiculed...the relatively recent 'becoming white' of the Irish in America—and the apparently 'eternal' nature of Irish national struggle historically—would seem to make this ancestry a matter of maintaining some spirit of rebellion for established or establishment enlightenment liberals in the US. It appeared to help offset Kennedy's image of privilege...
