For the thot experiment, I think it's also vital to distinguish getting millions for personally killing someone and watching them die in front of you (hitman example), and getting millions (or really enabling your children to get into the same elite prep schools as those of your college peers) for indirectly approving the probable death of abstract and yet-unidentified people far away who you can rationalize against "lives saved" by giving Americans the will to fight our enemies. That is the real calculation, which most people who graduate from good schools in America would take in a heartbeat.
